GeoGard Ultra is a broad-spectrum preservative blend made from:
•Gluconolactone
•Sodium Benzoate
 
Both of these ingredients are not petroleum-derived.
•Gluconolactone is a naturally occurring polyhydroxy acid (PHA), often derived from corn or other plant-based sources.
•Sodium Benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, which can be found naturally in some fruits and spices. Although benzoic acid can be synthesized from petrochemical sources, cosmetic-grade sodium benzoate is often derived from food-safe or nature-identical sources, not from petroleum directly.
 
So while Sodium Benzoate can be synthesized through petrochemical methods, in practice, GeoGard Ultra is generally considered a nature-identical, ECOCERT- and COSMOS-approved preservative, and is widely accepted for use in natural and organic formulations.
